Ritchie Law Firm has represented families who have lost loved ones due to car accidents, truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, medical malpractice, workplace accidents, and other forms of negligence. Our attorneys handle these cases with the skill and sensitivity they require, pursuing maximum compensation while allowing families the space to grieve.

Virginia's Wrongful Death Act

Virginia's Wrongful Death Act (Virginia Code § 8.01-50) allows the personal representative of a deceased person's estate to bring a civil lawsuit against the party or parties responsible for the death. The proceeds of a successful wrongful death claim are distributed to the statutory beneficiaries — typically the surviving spouse, children, and other close family members.

Recoverable damages under Virginia's Wrongful Death Act include sorrow, mental anguish, and solace; loss of income, services, protection, care, and assistance; medical expenses incurred before death; and reasonable funeral expenses. In cases involving particularly egregious conduct, punitive damages may also be available.

Our Approach to Wrongful Death Cases

We understand that no amount of money can replace a loved one. Our goal in wrongful death cases is to hold the responsible parties accountable, provide financial security for the surviving family, and ensure that the circumstances leading to the death are fully investigated and documented.

Our attorneys handle all aspects of the wrongful death claim — from the initial investigation through settlement negotiations or trial — so that families can focus on healing. We work on a contingency fee basis, meaning there are no attorney fees unless we recover compensation for your family.
